Growing up Halloween had always been a very American thing, only recently has been making an appearance in Australia. These appearances are in the form of parties than door knocking. As a country not having very much experience in this holiday it can be hard knowing what is right and wrong.
A little bit of History
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival is a celebration at the of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. It was the time when pagans took stock of supplies and prepared for winter. The ancients believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped with the deceased coming back to cause havoc.
Masks and costumes where worn to mimic or appease the spirits. This practise goes back to the middle ages. The practise of pumpkin carving into Jack-O-Lanterns, were traditionally carried by guisers in order to frighten the evil spirits.
Food
The most common treats are, because it falls in the wake of the apple harvest, toffee apples. Other common foods are barmbrack, bonfire toffee, monkey nuts, caramel corn, novelty candy, pumpkin pie, roasted pumpkin seeds,
